It is possible to display the new products on the home page by simply following the steps mentioned here. To start with you will need to go to the admin panel of Magento installation. Once you login you need to go to the admin menu CMS  Pages  Home Page . Once there you need to switch to the design tab. Here you will find a Layout Update XML window. The code mentioned below should be pasted in this window.
