How to Install a template in PrestaShop

PrestaShop is open source software available as free download from their website. The method of installing PrestaShop is quite simple and so is a new template as described here. However there are some things that are best left of a professional hence you would probably require to hire a PrestaShop Developer if any customization was required.

Install Prestashop Theme

The following steps are involved in the installation of a template in PrestaShop. Your first need to download the PrestaShop files from the website of PrestaShop. The link to download the files here.

Download Prestashop Files

This will be one compressed file. You then need to upload the files to your web server. This can be done via FTP or through the control panel of your website. Now extract the compressed PrestaShop file via the control panel in the desired directory and install PrestaShop. This is the procedure you need to follow if this is a new PrestaShop if it is an existing version of PrestaShop then simply extract the contents of your template file first.

Install PrestaShop Engine

Now login to the web server to where PrestaShop is installed via FTP and upload the template files into the root directory.

Some templates also include a database file ‘SQL’ file. This is required to be installed via the phpMyAdmin tool, accessible from the control panel. However, you upload the SQL file only if you wish to overwrite your existing prestashop settings.

Once the template is installed it needs to be activated. This can be done from the PrestaShop Admin panel by simply going to the Admin menu Preferences Appearance and scrolling down to the theme section. Click on your new theme to activate it.
